They wrote each page from scratch. Some people still create pages by hand now and then. For the rest of us, we need some kind of web site authoring program to create a site. Basic Free Authoring ToolsFor absolute beginners, the easiest choice is to select a Web Host that offers a basic site-building program of its own. Most Web Hosts now have them. Yahoo for instance, has several sets of tools that you can choose. Basic site authoring tools will let you add a Title banner, name pages, create text files, upload pictures. No matter whose tools you use, it should be pretty simple. They have simplified things so much that many Web Hosts advertise that you can get a site going in minutes or hours. You will be able to do all of the basic webmaster tasks, but if you want to use something special, it may not work. The tools are expected to be used by the general public, and they usually do not support anything that would be beyond the capabilities of most people. However, some basic authoring tools do allow you more latitude. So if you may want to check around before you select your Web Host. Powerful Authoring ToolsFrontpage and Dreamweaver have been popular web site authoring programs for years. You have to purchase these programs before you can use them. FrontPage is easier to learn than Dreamweaver, but Dreamweaver has more power and tools. FrontPage is dependent on FrontPage extensions, which is something that is provided by the Web Host. Dreamweaver does not need anything like that. Dreamweave is still going strong. FrontPage is on the way out. Microsoft retired it. Although you can still buy it, you would be better off if you chose a different product. The replacement for Microsoft FrontPage is Microsoft Expression Web. Other powerful site authoring programs to consider are GoLive, Nvu (free), Coffeecup, RapidWeaver, and EvrSoft First Page. |
