It is, however, unethical. The search engines index and rank sites according to their special formulas. They keep those formulas secret, but eventually, weaknesses are found. For instance, Google relies heavily on the number of links and the text on the links. Whether they lead to or from your site, links can help. At one time, people would get any kind of links, and Google would rank them high. Eventually, Google caught on to this trick. Right now, Google looks to see if your links are from comparable sites to yours. If they are, then they count as good links. If they are not, then Google may lower your ranking because Google thinks you are trying to fool it. In short, if you are doing anything to fool the search engines, it is called Black Hat SEO. Stay away from such things. The search engines will eventually punish you by lowering your rankings. If you are not sure whether Google and the other search engines are against what you are doing, visit them. They have guidelines that they publish. Stay away from anything that sounds like Google bombing, spamdexing, keyword stuffing, doorway pages, invisible text, hiding text, or anything that is used to trick the search engines.
